Since comfrey is officially not recommended for internal use, I will start with some formulas intended for external application; the best one being Dr. John R. Christopher’s Bone, Flesh and Cartilage ointment. This wonderful formula contains comfrey root, oak bark, marshmallow root, mullein, walnut bark, gravel root, wormwood, lobelia and skullcap. Dr. Christopher used this as a fomentation and as a tea with no reported problems. Dr. Christopher also used a highly successful Burn paste which is made from equal parts honey and wheat germ, adding enough leaf in a food processor to make a thick paste. For more in formulas utilizing comfrey, refer to Dr. Christopher’s book, School of Natural Healing.  Planetary formulas market a comfrey salve for external use that contains comfrey leaf, calendula flower, plantain leaf, St. John’s wort, yarrow, Echinacea angustifolia root, barberry root, lavender herb and lavender essential oil, and chamomile essential oil.
